Brooke Atkins

Brooke has over 20 years’ experience in the community and recreation industry working in a variety of organisational settings including Local Government, NGO’s and Not-for-Profit at an Executive level and has featured as a keynote speaker at a number of major sport and recreation conferences. 

She was the Leader of over 1600 employees as an Executive Leader Operations for a large Not-for-Profit. Brooke was responsible for over 100 community and recreation assets in NSW and ACT and an annual operating budget of over $50+ million dollars and asset base totalling $450+ million dollars.. 

Brooke is a growth specialist in aquatics, sport and recreation, supporting the asset development and participation of many urban and regional communities. Brooke is passionate about improving the health outcomes of regional communities, particularly mental health outcomes and enabling greater access to facilities.

Matthew Haanappel

Matthew is a leader experienced in policy, project delivery and advocacy to achieve accessibility and equal opportunities for all. He also has experience managing Aquatic facilities and programs with proven success.

Matthew contributes regularly to multiple outlets in print and broadcast media and has a decade of experience in the Diversity & Inclusion sector. Recognized for his wide reaching contributions to community work, Matthew was honoured with the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2014 and received the International Paralympic Committee Contribution Award (PLY) in 2022. 

In his international swimming career spanning 2010 to 2021, Matthew achieved notable success, including Paralympic Gold and Bronze at London 2012, a World Championship Bronze in Montreal 2013, and multiple medals at the Paralympic Pan Pacific Championships in Los Angeles 2014. His achievements extend to the Rio Paralympics 2016 and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.

Michelle Nolland

Michelle has spent over 20 years in the Recreation, Aquatics, and sports sectors in a range of operational, leadership, strategic and executive roles, including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer roles. 

Michelle has managed some of Australia’s iconic aquatic and leisure centres and has partnered and built strong stakeholder relations with dozens of local councils. In her executive career, she has been responsible for a portfolio of 2,000+ staff, 100+sites, an asset value of $500+ million and annual turnovers of $50+ million. 

Michelle co-founded LARCAN in 2022 because she saw many industry gaps that LARCAN could fulfill, namely operational advice in the design phase of new developments, improving operational efficiencies in existing facilities, and engaging more members of the community to participate in physical and leisure activities.
